| The Friendly Face of Mental Illness |
Disability Awareness, Health & Fitness- Other, Life Skills- Other |
With warmth and wit, I pique students' & others'interest when I open the presentation telling them that “I am the friendly face of mental illness.” Students remark on how “I look so normal,” not like images they've seen in movies through the years where we've been portayed stereotypically as helpless or out of control. Mental Illness is treatable! We are just like everybody else but need a few more tools to live our lives-like peer support groups, good therapists, education. I discuss what it's like to live with, survive and thrive despite having a mental illness. I also share tools for growth for all of us like learning to love and accept yourself, following your dreams and staying around positive people who support you in your dreams. And I tell how I am fulfilling my dreams by being married, working part-time as a certified mental health peer counselor, being a published writer, an award-winning fine art photographer and a jazz singer even though I have a mental illness. We discuss symptoms of the different mental illnesses and when and where to get help-and suicide (which should always be taken seriously) and famous people past and present with mental illness. Q&A.
