ARTFUL VISCERA - An Exploration of the Italian Horror film 1960 through 1980 History,
Media- Film,
Performing Arts- Other
The Italians reinvented the horror film between 1960 and 1980. Generally, the genre was frowned upon by the fascist movement of the 1930's, but once the war ended and Italy had a chance to get back on their feet, they ended up making up for lost time by producing some of the most frightening films ever to grace a movie theater screen. From the trend setting work of directors like Mario Bava (Black Sunday) to the misanthropic nightmares of Lucio Fulci (Zombie), Italian horror films continue to place their mark on the current crop of American made nightmare films. Join me for the ultimate history lesson on European trash cinema. Comes complete with a vintage memorabilia presentation plus a 16mm showing of a digest version of Horror Castle (1963). This program would be very popular with your younger teenage and college years patrons.
$101- $200
WILLIAM CASTLE - The Ultimate Showman History,
Media- Film,
Performing Arts- Theater
William Castle was the ultimate film promotion artist of the 1950's. Anyone who's ever seen House on Haunted Hill (1958), The Tingler (1959), 13 Ghosts (1960) will attest to this. Emergo- The skeleton flying over the audiences who paid to see House on Haunted Hill, movie theater seats wired with a minor electrical voltage to give the audience of the Tingler the sensation that the Tingler itself was crawling up on them, or even the special glasses you needed to put on in order to see the ghosts in 13 Ghosts. Castle knew how to sell a picture and keep audiences coming back for more. This program will give you a complete history of William Castles, from his humble beginnings right through his pioneer horror pictures of the 1950's and finally to his acceptance by the art-house crowd for his production of Rosemary's Baby. Includes film memorabilia and a selection of trailers from Castles work via DVD. A perfect show for the Halloween season. NEW 2012

LAUREL & HARDY: THE SILENT YEARS Media- Film,

This is an excellent addition to my "Lost in Laughter with Laurel & Hardy" program which covers their sound work. In this program we examine how the classic comedy team got paired together by Producer Hal Roach, and we look at the silent short comedies produced in the late 1920's. We will watch one of their classic silent short comedies, Do Detectives Think from 1927. It was this short that solidified the classic persona they would adapt and in term would make them the most recognizable comedy teams in history. This program uses DVD.

HAL ROACH - Hollywood's Hidden King of Comedy Media- Film,
Media- Video,
Performing Arts- Clowning
Hal Roach was certainly a well know producer, but so few realize that this man gave us some of the best comedic acts that Hollywood had to offer. From his humble roots being born to Irish immigrant parents in Elmira NY, to his journey to California to become a successful prospector, Hal Roach himself never envisioned becoming the King of Comedy. But he did, giving us Harold Loyd, Laurel and Hardy, The Little Rascals and so many more. This program focuses on Roach's early career and creative output, and will use 16mm comedy shorts to exemplify Roach's output.

SPAGHETTI WESTERNS - How Europe Changed the Face of Western Cinema Media- Film,
Performing Arts- Other,
Visual Arts- Other
This seminar explores how Italian filmmakers took an American genre of film-making and completely reshaped it giving the world a very different view of the old west. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly blurred the definition of good and evil. We will cover the work of Sergio Leone as well as explore the countless spin-offs as done by the Spanish, Germans, Mexicans and others. A delicious selection of DVD clips punctuate the footage used to draw examples. The casual cinema viewer will broaden their outlook and appreciate other film genres via this presentation. *NOTE* Due to the nature of the subject matter, I do insist this seminar be classified for "Adults". Westerns by nature can be violent, so don't aim this program at children or pre-teens. It is meant for "Adults". Thank you!
