JEWISH INFLUENCES IN FILM History,
Media- Film,
Performing Arts- Other
This program focuses on the influence of Jewish immigrants on the United States film culture during the Golden Age of Hollywood and, depending on the program picked by the participating sponsor, will focus on examples of actors (Kirk Douglas, Melvin Douglas), actresses (Lauren Bacall, Shelley Winters), directors (Billy Wilder, Otto Preminger) and producers (Samuel Goldwyn, Carl Laemmle). Program concludes with a showing of a 16mm condensation of the Marx Brothers Monkey Business (1931).
$101- $200
THE HONEYMOONERS - Jackie Gleason and Company - America's Most Beloved Television Show History,
Media- Film,
Performing Arts- Clowning
Ok, here is the program I've had the most requests for. Join me for a delightful trip down memory lane as we investigate the career of comic actor genius Jackie Gleason and his entourage with focus paid to the classic series The Honeymooners, which aired from October 1, 1955 to September 22, 1956. Since the final broadcast, the Honeymooners has gone out to countless syndication showings which have resulted in New Years Eve marathon telecasts and festivals. The highlight of this program is a 16mm showing of a rare Honeymooners episode title Hello Mom (which aired December 3, 1951). Find out about Gleason, Art Carney, Audry Meadows, Joyce Randolf and the behind the scene stories of the show itself. Bound to be a very popular program, so book now! Praise from Edith Kalickstein of Long Beach Public Library regarding THE HONEYMOONERS - Jackie Gleason and Company - America's Most Beloved Television Show: The program was excellent and brought back many memories. I also had a few laughs. Thank you so much for sharing with the Long Beach community. They had such a good time.
$101- $200
Propaganda of the Axis - The Other Side of WWII as Seen Through the Eyes of the Enemy History,
Media- Film,
Performing Arts- Storytelling
Here is the third and perhaps best entry on my long running War & Cinema series. This time out we explore WWII as seen through the eyes of the Japanese, Italian and German perspective. We do this by looking at their propaganda; exploring newsreels, cartoons, and various other forms of "entertainment" designed to keep their public actively involved in the war effort, and of course extolling the virtues of their causes. Whether it be the "Die for your Country" cries of the Japanese, or the "inspire your nation into unity that will obey" slogan of Italian Fascism, or the xenophobic warnings of "imperialist invaders ruining the purity of race" extolled by the Germans, this program is the ultimate examination of what our enemies were thinking during WWII.
$101- $200
ARTFUL VISCERA - An Exploration of the Italian Horror film 1960 through 1980 History,
Media- Film,
Performing Arts- Other
The Italians reinvented the horror film between 1960 and 1980. Generally, the genre was frowned upon by the fascist movement of the 1930's, but once the war ended and Italy had a chance to get back on their feet, they ended up making up for lost time by producing some of the most frightening films ever to grace a movie theater screen. From the trend setting work of directors like Mario Bava (Black Sunday) to the misanthropic nightmares of Lucio Fulci (Zombie), Italian horror films continue to place their mark on the current crop of American made nightmare films. Join me for the ultimate history lesson on European trash cinema. Comes complete with a vintage memorabilia presentation plus a 16mm showing of a digest version of Horror Castle (1963). This program would be very popular with your younger teenage and college years patrons.
$101- $200
LAUREL & HARDY: THE SILENT YEARS Media- Film,
Media- Video,
Performing Arts- Clowning
This is an excellent addition to my "Lost in Laughter with Laurel & Hardy" program which covers their sound work. In this program we examine how the classic comedy team got paired together by Producer Hal Roach, and we look at the silent short comedies produced in the late 1920's. We will watch one of their classic silent short comedies, Do Detectives Think from 1927. It was this short that solidified the classic persona they would adapt and in term would make them the most recognizable comedy teams in history. This program uses DVD.
$101- $200
Edgar Allan Poe - From Literature to the Silver Screen! Literature- Authors,
Media- Film,
Performing Arts- Theater
Edgar Allan Poe - From Literature to the Silver Screen!: The literary genius who gave us the mystery, horror and sci-fi genres is under our microscope for this presentation. Poe's achievements in literature are well documented. But not many know about how long Poe has been influencing cinema. In this program we will watch some short films based on Poe's work, and we'll also see clips from feature films as well. We'll talk about the actors and directors who made a career off of bringing Poe's stories to life, Vincent Price, Roger Corman and so many more. So get ready for thrills and chills as we dig deep into the legend of Edgar Allan Poe and the cinematic macabre he so cleverly influenced.
$101- $200
Santa Claus and the Movies - How the mythical elf of merriment has been presented on the silver screen! History,
Media- Film,
Performing Arts- Storytelling
This is an oddball but fun presentation showing the various depictions of the Santa Claus legend throughout the years. From Miracle on 34th Street to such crazy adaptations of the story such as Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, we'll investigate the history of Santa Claus through both legend and literature and its ultimate incarnation on the screen. This program will be a seasonal must. Loaded with clips of some of the strangest presentations of Santa over the past decades. It's a unique program to say the least.
$101- $200
Lon Chaney Sr - Man of a Thousand Faces and More!: History,
Media- Film,
Performing Arts- Theater
Perhaps one of the least spoken about talents from the golden days of silent Hollywood film productions, Lon Chaney's influence on modern Hollywood make-up effects is second to none. Not only was he a fantastic make-up man, he was also one of the best actors of his time, very often choosing to underplay a part rather than go for the typical theatrics that punctuated the bulk of the performances from that era. Chaney had a smooth style all his own, and proved he could play just about any role handed to him which in turn, kept him from being typecast. Join us as we watch clips from some of Chaney's work including classics such as Phantom of the Opera (1925), The Unholy Three (1925), Tell it to the Marines (1926), and many more. This would make a great double booking with my Lon Chaney Jr. presentation. Perfect for the Halloween season!
$101- $200
HOLLYWOOD BALLYHOO - The Selling of Genre Cinema to the General Public History,
Media- Film,
Performing Arts- Theater
Now this is a truly fun program that will delight your audience. We explore the various gimmicks used by film producers to sell their product to the unwary public, gimmicks such as 3-D, Odorama, Smell-O-Vision, Cinerama, CinemaScope, etc... are all explored and shown as examples via a DVD presentation. Memorabilia that includes lobby cards, posters, and various props used to lure in the audience are also shown. Various film genres are discussed, including Horror films, Westerns, Comedies, Holiday Movies, and much, much more. NEW 2012
$101- $200
VINCENT PRICE - Hollywood's Handsome Master of Menace Media- Film,
Media- Video,
Performing Arts- Theater
Vincent Price was a box office draw with his horror films of the 1950's, 60's and 70's. But many never realized that Price was being groomed for more romantic leading parts in such films as The Song of Bernadette and Laura. This program focuses on the career of Vincent Price, from his early years in Hollywood to his later years working with the notorious American International Pictures and finally his rediscovery at the hands of filmmaker Tim Burton. A combination of DVD and film presentation, we also get a look at some rare pressbooks and posters used to advertise Price's pictures, this program is the ultimate testament to one of Hollywood's greatest talents.
