Singer-Pianist-Entertainer and society orchestra leader Mitch Kahn celebrates the Great American Popular Songbook with “Sail Away”, a nautical voyage through the eyes of vintage songwriters Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, Noel Coward, Frank Loesser, Hoagy Carmichael, Bart Howard, Jimmy Van Heusen, Harold Arlen, Yip Harburg, Sammy Cahn, Kurt Weill and the Gershwins (among others), as well as contemporary notables Ian Hunter, Peter Allen and Dennis Deyoung (of the rock band Styx). Song titles include well known standards “On a Slow Boat to China”, Beyond the Sea”, “Come Fly With Me” and “Skylark”, plus lesser known titles such as “I Go to Rio”, “Ships”, (recorded by Barry Manilow) and title song “Sail Away” (written by Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence). Take a trip back in time to the 1400’s and spend a day in the simple Italian town of Vinci, where a remarkable young boy named Leonardo once lived. Watch as he takes his first few steps toward greatness, by letting his imagination fly and his curiosity take hold of everything around him. An apprentice in the studio of Master Verrocchio, Leonardo is exposed to the wonders of art and science. He paints, he studies, he builds – in short, he lets his dreams come true. The man who would come to be known as the painter of the Mona Lisa had to start somewhere, and this is an imaginary tale of how it happened. The Robert Rogers Puppet Company was founded in 1980, and has since performed thousands of times across the country and around the world. While it is available all year, providing meaningful, artistic productions for summer reading programs is an especially enjoyable pursuit for the troupe.

All the stories in this program are old folktales, from six countries around the world. This program takes its theme from the 2017 summer reading theme. Stories in the program: 999 Steps, from Japan; the First House, from India; Lazy Jack, from England; The First Strawberries, from the Cherokee; the Butterfly Coat, from China; and Hummingbird's Advice, from India. The artists' extensive early instrument collection features a joyous diversity of historic Medieval, Renaissance, & traditional instruments. Playing upon the intriguing and rare historic hurdy gurdy to enrich our theme and setting, we are pleased to accompany our performance journey with an early music mini-concert specially designed for children, highlighting a diverse collection of early instruments of all shapes, sizes, and materials. Imaginations are courted with the mysterious and evocative sounds. As you enjoy this exploration of historic instruments from bagpipes to 'whittle and dub' you will marvel at the wonderful ways human kind has used wood, animal horn, reed, leather, and ingenuity to invent instruments that create a rainbow of musical sounds. This program is being packaged as a 2-for-1 with 'STONE SOUP WITH THE HURDY GURDY MAN' These two complementary programs unite perfectly to appeal to all the senses, a memorable and meaningful A treasure for the eyes, ears, and imagination!

Japanese Arts Center, Ryu Shu Kan Taiko Drums Workshop Multicultural- Other,

Workshops allow our performers to share the joy of Taiko with their audiences. Taiko is used as an educational tool to teach the music, culture and history of Japan to the community; and to imbue a strong appreciation for cultural tradition and the arts. Our Taiko workshop begins with a warm-up routine to prepare to strike the Taiko in a safe and controlled manner so there will be no injuries during the class. We then proceed to teach the basic swings involved with the various traditional pieces to be taught. After learning a few basic rhythms, the participants will learn two pieces that require not only striking the Taiko; but also movement around the Taiko which incorporate Martial Arts movements & traditional Folk Dance movements.

Craft project, Party favor, and really cool toy all swirled into one! It's that classic ribbon-on-a-stick toy. When TREVOR opens up his Big Red Ribbon Suitcase, ooh and ahhs go through the crowd as they catch sight of all the different colors of ribbon Everyone gets their favorite attached to a wooden handle. And then the creativity begins! First, the kids decorate their handle with a wide variety of tapes. There's no limits to the amount of tape they can use, so the results are fabulous! And when the kids are done with their art project, they all begin waving them around in the air in one big Ribbon Dance! It really adds to the festiveness of your event. And the looks of joy on the children's faces are priceless. Plus, everyone has a personalized souvenir to take home, and will remember your event each time they pull out their Ribbon Dancer for more FUN later on.

American history comes alive when Bill Gormont brings THE GREAT AMERICAN MAGIC SHOW to your library. This exciting show reinforces our nation's birth and history through entertaining situations filled with magic, illusion and fun. Bill highlights special people and important historical moments that include our first flag, the Declaration of Independence and much, much more. He introduces a modern day Betsy Ross (an audience volunteer) with a hilarious flag routine. Betsy would be proud to see Bill, the stage and accessories decked out in red, white and blue. Audience participation is always a large part of the show. Lucky spectators are invited to have fun on stage as they enjoy learning about our first U.S. Presidents in a magical sort of way. The grand finale is filled with surprise, action and colorful productions. What a wonderful way to close out a fun filled educational experience that celebrates the history of our great nation and stirs the patriotism in our hearts. THE GREAT AMERICAN MAGIC SHOW is suitable for presentation to all ages and is the perfect choice for national holiday celebrations like President’s Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, 4th of July, Labor Day and Veteran’s Day.
