| From Waterdrop to Watershed |
Nature- Environment, Science, Visual Arts- Other |
Strawtown invites participants to learn fascinating and important new things about water and water habitats through hands-on Art and Science workshops.
We begin with a discussion about the many ways we use, appreciate and interact with water. We take a close look at one drop of water, and how it travels in a larger vase of water. Participants make observations about what they see. We look at how one tinted drop of water falls into a vortex of water, and participants relate this to other experiences they have with water.
Participants make ink drop paintings using the same scientific materials with which we just worked. They experiment with the way the ink drop moves around on the wet and/or dry paper. With watercolor pencils they personalize their paintings.
With volunteers we demonstrate what a watershed is. With different earth materials, we look at how raindrops fall onto a “mountain”, and create a watershed with tributaries, ponds, lakes, and oceans. Participants learn to see the connection between the water cycle and human activity with regard for woodlands, wetland habitats, grasslands, soil, and geology, and animal bio-diversity.
