Around the World in An Afternoon Multicultural- Other,

Performing Arts- Storytelling
Starting with a folk tale from the small island nation of Haiti, I will take students on an imaginary journey across the Atlantic, where they will meet characters commonly found in European and African folklore. We will continue our journey around the globe, with a stop in Asia, then the South Seas and finally back home to the United States. As we travel, we will talk about why people tell stories, and explore why similar stories appear in a different cultures around the world. During the 30-60 minute concert (program length and repertoire adjustable to suit your scheduling and curricular needs), listeners will be active participants in the program, both as an audience who delights in the magic of stories and songs from such a wide variety of cultures, and as “explorers” who help me answer questions about the tradition of storytelling and the stories themselves. At turns hilarious and serious, Story Laurie magically glides from one character to the next, employing her marvelous vocal skills, gestures and facial expressions. Perfect for libraries, schools and community events -- Laurie has a knack for enchanting both young and old equally!

2011 One World, Many Stories - Around the World... Multicultural- Other,

Performing Arts- Storytelling
Once upon a time, a young fellow named Jack grew a cabbage so enormous, he decided to see if he could sail it across the open sea. He could! And so he did. . .And so begins “Around the World in An Afternoon”, a musical storytelling adventure that will transport your library audience to lands both near and far. Within the frame story of Jack sailing on his cabbage (based on an old story dreamed up by Pete Seeger long ago), Story Laurie takes listeners on an imaginary journey that begins in your library’s backyard. The audience will sail south to the small island nation of Haiti, to hear a traditional folk tale. Then they will set sail across the Atlantic, where they will meet characters commonly found in European and African folklore. We then continue our journey around the globe, with a stop in Asia, then the South Seas and finally back home to the United States...singing songs, telling tales, off we go!
$201- $350

Performing Arts- Storytelling
Story Laurie introduces students to the art of storytelling and walks them through the process of preparing their own folk tale or fable for the telling. In the workshop sessions, storytelling and improve games help the students develop useful storytelling skills such as developing eye contact and use of gesture and voice. The artist teaches students to learn their story by developing imagery and creating a storyboard, rather than through rote memorization. In grades 3 & up, students work individually or with a partner; for grades K-2, students learn a group tale to share with other groups or classes.
$201- $350
