Propaganda of the Axis - The Other Side of WWII as Seen Through the Eyes of the Enemy History,
Media- Film,
Performing Arts- Storytelling
Here is the third and perhaps best entry on my long running War & Cinema series. This time out we explore WWII as seen through the eyes of the Japanese, Italian and German perspective. We do this by looking at their propaganda; exploring newsreels, cartoons, and various other forms of "entertainment" designed to keep their public actively involved in the war effort, and of course extolling the virtues of their causes. Whether it be the "Die for your Country" cries of the Japanese, or the "inspire your nation into unity that will obey" slogan of Italian Fascism, or the xenophobic warnings of "imperialist invaders ruining the purity of race" extolled by the Germans, this program is the ultimate examination of what our enemies were thinking during WWII.

Peter Lorre : Hollywood's Unsung Master of Mayhem History,
Media- Film,
Visual Arts- Other
Another entry for the Halloween season. Join us as we unmask thriller film legend Peter Lorre and we explore his life from his earliest days in Hungary where he was known under his real name Laszlo Lowenstein to his rise to stardom in Germany and his ultimate transformation into Hollywood boogeyman. We also explore Lorre's "A" list work including Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon. We'll talk about his working relationships with fellow actors Humphry Bogart and Sidney Greenstreet as well as his troubled personnel life and bouts with depression and alcohol. We'll be watching a plethora of film clips as well as viewing a mountain of memorabilia. This is another "must have" presentation.
$101- $200
Long Island, the Gold Coast and Hollywood History,
Media- Film,
Visual Arts- Other
Here's a unique and interesting program that will please your patrons as well as wet the apatite of Long Islanders curious to see how their beloved home is represented in the Hollywood of old. Utilizing clips from vintage Hollywood films I will give a detailed account of the West coasts view of the East coast. A Gold Coast mansion could either be the scene of a storm swept murder mystery or provide the perfect setting for a Marx Brothers comedy, but the exclusivity, beauty and wonder of Long Island will forever be captured in the heyday of tinsel town and the representations vary in interesting ways. Join us for this historical journey of cinema and seascape.
$101- $200
Rallying Up The Troops - Hollywood and the Films of World War II: History,
Media- Film,
Visual Arts- Other
Here is an excellent follow up program for those who booked the World War One As Seen Through Hollywood's Lens seminar. This program details the aim of Hollywood in its rally call to produce propaganda films that would persuade the American people to wholeheartedly join the war effort. By pulling together some of Hollywood's top talent (many of whom were already in active service via the armed forces), Hollywood proved to be vitally instrumental in drumming up the force needed to help the allies win the war. Hear the history of how all of this unfolded, and see clips from some of the most famous propaganda films produced in Tinsel Town including Casablanca (1942), Joan of Paris (1942), A Yank on the Burma Road (1942), as well as countless others. We even explore the use of loaded imagery in various other genres including musicals, horror, animation and more! Excellent program for the Memorial Day weekend and the months leading up to it.
$101- $200
JEWISH INFLUENCES IN FILM History,
Media- Film,

This program focuses on the influence of Jewish immigrants on the United States film culture during the Golden Age of Hollywood and, depending on the program picked by the participating sponsor, will focus on examples of actors (Kirk Douglas, Melvin Douglas), actresses (Lauren Bacall, Shelley Winters), directors (Billy Wilder, Otto Preminger) and producers (Samuel Goldwyn, Carl Laemmle). Program concludes with a showing of a 16mm condensation of the Marx Brothers Monkey Business (1931).

The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals - Song and Dance History,
Media- Film,
Media- Video
I've been asked so many times about doing a program like this, and here it finally is! We will be watching clips from classic movie musicals beginning with the early days of Busby Berkeley and his pre-psychedelic choreographed dance numbers. We will follow the development of the movie musical with footage of Carmen Miranda, Judy Garland, Fred Astaire , Gene Kelly, and classic films such as Singing in the Rain, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Sound of Music and so much more. So put on your dancing shoes and get your baritone voice ready, it's time to celebrate the Hollywood musical in all its glory!
$101- $200
Lon Chaney Sr - Man of a Thousand Faces and More!: History,
Media- Film,
Performing Arts- Theater
Perhaps one of the least spoken about talents from the golden days of silent Hollywood film productions, Lon Chaney's influence on modern Hollywood make-up effects is second to none. Not only was he a fantastic make-up man, he was also one of the best actors of his time, very often choosing to underplay a part rather than go for the typical theatrics that punctuated the bulk of the performances from that era. Chaney had a smooth style all his own, and proved he could play just about any role handed to him which in turn, kept him from being typecast. Join us as we watch clips from some of Chaney's work including classics such as Phantom of the Opera (1925), The Unholy Three (1925), Tell it to the Marines (1926), and many more. This would make a great double booking with my Lon Chaney Jr. presentation. Perfect for the Halloween season!
$101- $200
CHARLES CHAPLIN - The Little Tramp and Lots of Laughs History,
Media- Film,
Media- Other
Who can dare book a comedy seminar without featuring the king of comedy himself, Charles Chaplin. The man who said; A day without a laugh is a wasted day, Charles Chaplin was the crown prince of silent film comedy, and one of the few men who continued his career into the sound pictures with remarkable style and wit. With a look unique only to himself, Chaplin created the sympathetic comic hero, his tramp persona a creation of his out of the real life poverty and misery he experienced as a child in England. A fantastic 60 minute program that features a showing of one of his classic silent comedies (Program Directors choice of The Cure (1917), The Immigrant (1917) or Easy Street (1917). Or watch all three and make it a longer program). Presented in Super 8mm format.
$101- $200
FRANKENSTEIN AT 200- Adapting Shelley to the Silver Screen History,
Literature- Authors,
Media- Film
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, a novel of Gothic horror turns 200 years old in 2018. Join us in a birthday celebration as we examine the cinematic adaptations of Shelley's problem child. Starting with Thomas Edison's 1910 adaptation, and following through with Universal Pictures classic with Boris Karloff, we come up to the present while viewing clips of films based on Shelley's work. We will also examine a plethora of movie memorabilia as we discuss the importance of Mary's novel and its various incarnations of the silver screen. From Karloff to Christopher Lee to Robert DeNiro, we will explore it all and bask in the glory of Mary Shelley's timeless masterpiece.
$101- $200
ABBOTT & COSTELLO - The Early Years History,
Media- Film,

Here is a fun program exploring the history of one of America's greatest comedy teams. This program explains the history of Bud and Lou, from their introduction right through their years in Burlesque, Radio and finally the Motion Picture screen. We focus quite a bit on the WWII era films, and we also discuss their career lags, rebirth and finally their split up and solo careers.
