Shakespeare for the Common Core (Recommended K-8th grade) We meet the Bard as he is working on his plays “Romeo and Juliet”, “Julius Caesar”, and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” is the central play of this production. It is a timeless story about two young teens who find love despite the prejudice and hatred of their families. Shakespeare’s words come alive with imagination, swordplay, and romance. Through this production, we hope to introduce the students to more of Shakespeare’s works while encouraging them to overcome prejudices in their own lives.

I am the author of the children's book, I Grew Up On A Farm. I come dressed as a farmer in overalls, straw hat and red handkerchief. I bring with me farm paraphanalia such as; a wooden chicken crate, chicken hook, egg baskets (with wooden display eggs, different colored eggs, large feed sack, realistic toy chickens, and other farm implements. I share stories of my experiences growing up on a farm using the various farm implements while reading my book to the group. It is on Power Point format, so large audiences are not a problem. Children Learn what poetry truly is and how it shows what the world is and how they want to be! Through poems by such poets as Ruben Dario, Po Chu-I, Lewis Carroll, and more, children learn that poetic music comes from a person's seeing the world honestly, as the oneness of opposites. These are the same opposites that are in them, in their family, in classmates--like soft and hard, slow and fast, high and low. Poetry will be closer to chidlren, as they see that it has beauty & power! The music of a true poem makes for a big feeling of honestly liking the world!
