Traditional American Folk songs and tunes tracing sections of American history with the use of a U.S. map. I will show the Old Chisolm Trail (The Lonesome Cowboy) and Oregon Trail (Sweet Betsy From Pike), the path of the Underground Railroad (Follow the Drinking Gourd), the Erie Canal and others. There will be opportunites for singing along and creative movement. Instruments will include mandolin, guitar, vocals and traditional American instruments mountain dulcimer, limberjack, and banjo. There will also be a crankie - a traditional American folk art form from the Appalachian Mountains. I will also explain the importance of folk music throughout history. This can be presented with a power point presentaion.

BJ and Company will custom design the right program for your needs. We have worked extensively with children and families and performed hundreds of shows. SUGGESTED PROGRAM … a fun introduction to the art of clowning. Barb will come and gradually change costume to become BJ the Clown. She will apply professional clown make up on three audience volunteers to show the three main clown types (whiteface, hobo, august), and have a fun discussion about the art of clowning. Discover the treasure of music with a musical scavenger hunt. Listen for names of animals, places, and more in these fun and interactive songs, and color a treasure map filled with pictures of these clues. This program has been specially designed for the 2006 Summer Reading Program. The program can be adapted for older or younger children and will include a song written for this year’s theme.

Scientific Secrets of Magic reveals the scientific principles behind the tricks of magician Ron Cain’s trade. Children learn simple magic involving chemistry, physics, biology, psychology and math. The Syracuse University graduate and former teacher also offers other workshops that combine class instruction with hands-on activities: IT'S MAGIC! teaches kids to perform magic with ordinary objects like cards, coins and rope. Children learn simple tricks that involve chemistry, physics, biology, psychology and math. CLOWNING AROUND shows them how to have fun with juggling, yo-yos and balloon animals. THE WORLD OF HARRY POTTER gives Hogwarts fans a chance to take magical classes and play wizard games. ENCHANTED CREATURES focuses on the folklore and legends surrounding elves, fairies, leprechauns, trolls, dragons and unicorns. MONSTEROLOGY sheds light on the seven monster families and invites students to use their imagination to create creepy creatures. A GATHERING OF GHOSTS introduces students to classic ghost stories and beliefs. THE WILD, WILD WEST lets children pretend to be cowboys (and girls) and learn about Wild Bill Hickok, Annie Oakley and Sitting Bull.

An experienced folk music performer and family literacy teacher, with a specialty in traditional American singing games, Cathy uses guitar, banjo, limberjack puppets, flute, drum and penny whistle in her programs which are tailored for specific age groups
