| The Power of Song in the Civil Rights Movement |
History, Music, Performing Arts- Other |
This “Stand Up and Sing Out” program (see above) focuses on the songs of the Civil Rights Movement. It traces the sound track of the movement from the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955 to the March on Washington in 1963 to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King in 1968 and beyond. Learn about the songs’ roots in era of slavery, the black churches of the south and the labor movement of the early 20th century and discover how the lessons of the civil rights movement have influenced and are reflected in “movement songs” of today. Be prepared to sing along and feel the power of the music that breathed the soul of the civil rights movement.
This engaging, educational, entertaining and empowering program is particularly excellent for college audiences and can be supplemented with in-class lectures/concerts, Q&A and workshops to address the specific questions and interests of students today. It is also excellent for schools, arts centers, festivals, conferences, libraries, churches and anywhere else people want to experience the power of song.

| Ground Breaking Troubadours |
History, Music, Performing Arts- Other |
Spook Handy has been called “a modern day troubadour in the style of Pete Seeger and Phil Ochs.” In fact, Spook’s style of acoustic guitar, harmonica and singing fits right in with the Ground Breaking Troubadours of the 20th Century – Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Peter Paul and Mary, Phil Ochs and others – who paved the path for thousands of acoustic songwriters and folk musicians to follow.
This program tells the history of America through songs that were often the first of their kind. Many of the songs in this program and the stories behind them were taught to Spook by his mentor Pete Seeger.

| Songs of the Great Depression and Today |
History, Music, Performing Arts- Other |
When the Great Depression hit, a whole new genre of American folk music was born. Songs about the Dust Bowl, the Great Migration, bread lines and soup kitchens, the New Deal and times of triumph and struggle circulated throughout labor camps, churches and family gatherings. These songs depicted down-to-earth everyday realities of the American laborer and farmer, the hungry and the industrious, centuries old traditions and the transition to a new modern society. It can be surprising how many of these old songs speak of challenges we face today and how new songs written about today's America can so resemble the songs of the Great Depression. An excellent program for Libraries, Arts Centers, Churches, Schools and other meeting places.

| Senior Outreach |
History, Music, Performing Arts- Other |
Seniors Outreach – Many Senior Centers, Assisted Living Facilities and Nursing Homes with limited budgets can still afford top notch musical entertainment. That's because Spook has drastically reduced his fees for such venues as a way of giving back to a generation that has given so much to our nation and world. Beside, whats more soul satisfying than spending an hour sharing Americas favorite songs like Good Night, Irene Shell be Coming Around the Mountain, and Somewhere Over the Rainbow (not to mention a Beetles song or two) with a room full of people who just love to sing?
