Mischief, Merry Tales & Tunes along the Towpath History,

Climb aboard a packet boat and back in time with Merry Mischief's Tales & Tunes along the Towpath! Merry Mischief is an costumed acoustic duo(Merlyn & Harry) who come dressed as Canal Travelers and entertain your audience with music and historical facts from the Erie Canal. Music from the time of the Erie Canal and American folk music with it's wild and wooly history, along with poetry (and of course, a few fun jokes :) makes this a great community and/or reading program! A fun way to make History come ALIVE! Program suitable for the young to the seasoned adult.

Greta peeks beneath the surface of dirt and asks- what is dirt and how is it made? Is there “good” dirt and “bad” dirt? Digging into nature’s recycling with worms, the puppets Jasmine & Tessy appear in a simple show about composting. Tessy is shocked & grossed out by the idea of manure & worm poop. Jasmine & the audience do their best to soothe her fears & assure her that worms are busy beneath the surface making new dirt. Worm poop, after all, makes the best soil. Butterfly, ladybug, & worm puppets have guest appearances as they eat, poop, & wander through the flowers. The audience gets to dig in at the finale when Greta opens her compost bin filled with real worms & shares the contents. Hand washing instruction included! Also starring Reduce, Reuse & Recycle. Puppet making workshops available.

Pinocchio (Recommended K-8th grade) Carlo Collodi’s Pinocchio is the timeless tale of an Italian woodcarver, Geppetto, who carves a son out of a block of pine. Join the wooden marionette on his journey to become a real boy! Through Pinocchio’s mischievous adventures, he discovers that to truly be human is to be good-hearted and brave. This is a story of self-discovery, transformation, and redemption. With this play, we hope to teach students the importance of honesty, education, and gratitude.

South African-born songwriter and musician, Toby Tobias, is excited to be performing an original show in various venues on the East Coast and in the Midwest called 'Journey from Johannesburg'. It is a performance which tells the story of his journey through 3 continents and takes the form of his original songs interspersed with small narrated vignettes about his life growing up in Johannesburg, South Africa and Jerusalem, Israel and finally New York, USA. The show's message is one of racial equality, understanding of each other's cultures and religions and a strong desire for togetherness in a world which seeks to divide rather than bring together.

'15 Miles on the Erie Canal' is a colorful and very participatory historic musical storytelling event for the whole family. Enjoy this lively collage of Tall Tales, Costumes, Music and Sing-along Songs as the artists share an unforgettable story of New York’s famous waterway. Presented in 19th century 'folk opera' performance style, it sparkles with canal-era music from cultures along the canal, performed on a rare collection of historic instruments including hammer dulcimer, banjo, fiddle, hurdy gurdy, early squeezeboxes, canal horn, and more. Our story unfolds as Captain Simon Slick and Irish cook Sallie Waters meet up with Sal, a truly amazing mule who makes quite a splash (and also happens to be guest from the audience!). Together they set off on a rollicking journey down The Grand E-ri-e Canal, 8th Wonder of the World! Great characters, great stories, and an unforgettable historic enrichment experience for Summer Reading Programs! NOTE: For a gala event, our “15 Miles” performance may be expanded with your choice of NYS Canal Cultural Heritage workshop activities: expanded singing roles for a children’s/family chorus; lively canal-era children's dances; and even student-written Tall Tale vignettes for the Grand Finale.
