Theater, Arm-of-the-Sea City That Drinks the Mountain Sky History,
Nature- Environment,
Performing Arts- Puppetry
The epic story of water for New York City, told in the elemental beauty of mask & puppet theatre. Heralded as one of the wonders of the world, New York City's ingenious system of aqueducts and reservoirs provides clear mountain water from the Catskills to nine million downstate residents. And though the struggle over these water resources has, at times, bitterly divided city managers and watershed residents, it has also irrevocably united them. Through a shimmering tapestry of poetry, puppetry and evocative music, City that Drinks the Mountain Sky brings alive the lyrical landscape of the Catskills— to portray the on-going story of the watershed and the uneasy marriage of those who must protect its vulnerable flowing treasure. You can expect plenty of visual punch and timely wit as the Hudson Valley's premier eco-logic theater traces life's quintessential liquid from mountain top to city tap. Study guide and post performance discussion provided for school audiences. Photos and video available at www.armofthesea.org

Adams, Lori Exploring Small – Become a Nature Detective! Media- Photography,
Nature- Environment,
Visual Arts- Other
This workshop challenges children to look at ordinary objects in different ways as an artist does. It encourages children to make their own discoveries about properties like color, light, form, texture, line and shading, and then how organizing and presenting this information can create artwork. I will use examples of my work as a fine artist using botanical specimens, examples of verse written for 'Little Flowers with Big Attitude' and my work as a scientific and documentary photographer for non-fiction children’s science books to help students compare and contrast being an artist and being a scientist and to encourage them in both directions. Magnifying glasses, natural objects, sample journals, paper and colored pencils are distributed. Observations are discussed about natural objects, and the various ways they can be interpreted via sketches, verse and/or scientifically. This workshop may also be booked as a series. If so, the participants receive handouts of how to photograph at home and bring in the objects and prints of their experiments.
