This program is held preferably in the beginning of each season and will involve a hands-on field trip into a nearby woodland. Attention will be directed to the various natural changes which are harbingers of each season such as plantlife, animals, weather patterns, some of which are obvious and some of which are subtle.

By themsleves they are just curious-looking rocks, but when viewed collectively patterns merge such as nature may not have created by sheer accident.

A slide show and lecture explaining how the earliest settlers and the local Indian tribes relied on commonly growing wild plants and fungi to supplement their meager diets and to treat ailments. Many are right under our noses and were familiar fare to our ancestors> Many are far more nutritious than garden variery vegetables and yet are ignored by modern man.

| How To Read the Woods (AKA Landscape Archaeology) |

Into this century what are now park woodlands were inhabited by small communities. As one travels these areas, evidence of former habitations can be seen--evidence such as foundations, stone walls, wells fruit trees, trash heaps, latrine pits, and introduced plant species are common and obvious. But most people don't realize what they are looking at when they see it. This show is an introduction to what is actually a form of archaeology which explains to those who frequently hike or otherwise are in the forest and fields, how to differentiate between the works of man and the works of nature.
Can also be done in conjunction with a field trip.

A slide show and lecture offering an introdution to plant identification by using texts and field guides and by pointing out the characteristics to look for without getting into deep technical discussion and analysis> NAture study is often presented as too overpowering for many and this can be intimidating. this program is a "user friendly" approach to thsi field of study which should make it a fun experience rather than an overpowering one.
