Mark Shulman is a fun writer who makes writing fun. He has written 150+ books for grades K-12. For over 15 years, Mark’s been teaching and sharing his love of writing. His books include nonfiction (National Geographic, Discovery Channel, Time for Kids, etc.) and picture books (packed with wordplay, gorillas, dogs and/or monsters) and Middle Grade/YA novels. Mark’s written books with James Patterson (the author), Oscar de la Hoya (the boxer) and Shamu (the whale). Every presentation is customized for your school, with your input. And Mark’s message is clear: Your students are already writers. Mark shares creative story-starters and workshop tips that teachers can use right away in their classroom. (His wife is a K-5 literacy staff developer) He makes writing sound like a top secret, or a sport, or the easiest thing in the world. He will de-mystify the writing process, energize students… and leave them wanting to sit right down and get started. That’s quite a lot for an hour.

Solomon Northup was a free black man living in New York State. In 1841 he was lured away from home and sold as a slave. For nearly twelve years, he was a slave in Louisiana. Finally he was able to get a message to friends in New York, and he was able to return home as a free man. After writing a book about his experiences, he traveled around the Northeast giving speeches, and even helped fugitive slaves get to Canada thanks to his work on the Underground Railroad. Mr. Fiske wrote Solomon Northup: His Life Before and After Slavery, and is a co-author of Solomon Northup: The Complete Story of the Author of Twelve Years a Slave.
