Homespun Community Dancing with Peter, Paul & George Multicultural- Other,
Music,
Performing Arts- Dance
Come kick up your heels to live fiddle music! Enjoy a tradition of community dancing and music handed down from generation to generation. Everyone gets involved – from ages 2 to 102 (especially those who have not danced before) -- in easy-to-learn American barn dance favorites: circles, squares, contras, as well as folk dances from around the world, like Ireland, Russia, Turkey, Israel, Tahiti, Mexico, France, Scandinavia, China and Africa. The toe-tapping tunes consist of reels, jigs, polkas, hornpipes and waltzes. Instruments may include fiddle, banjo, flute, pennywhistle, clarinet, guitar, piano, recorder, percussion, and more. While participation in the dancing is encouraged -- it's hard to sit still -- it's also fun to just watch and listen to the music. This program helps children develop an awareness of our traditional way of life - when people lived without electricity and had to make their own entertainment - and discusses the origins, sounds and uses of traditional instruments. The Family Dance usually includes a short sit-down period to talk about the dancing, music, instruments, and cultures.
