Presented in a highly accessible format for early-childhood, Kaboom! is a unique music and rhythm program which incorporates interactive activities that acquaint children with concepts such as keeping a beat, playing rhythms, pitch recognition and musical instrument families. KABOOM! utilizes puppets, World Music, and exotic percussion instruments to motivate, stimulate and educate.

The theme of this interactive presentation centers around drumming and rhythm around the world. Beginning with a demonstration of the African talking drum the audience is led on a rhythmic journey which traces the path of the drum through the Americas, and introduced to various concepts such as call and response, the dance connection, and keeping time. The history and role of the drumset in modern music is discussed and demonstrated. Diverse rhythms are presented through the use of native percussion instruments (African, Latin-American, Brazilian, etc.) with emphasis on drumming as a tool for human communication and unity. The event culminates in a Conga line where the participants play assorted percussion instruments. Group participation is encouraged.

This presentation explores the roots of jazz and takes the audience through a chronological journey culminating in today's jazz-fusion styles. The ensemble consists of three to five versatile musicians. Approximate time- 45 mins.- 1 hr. Program highlights: The rhythm section- (piano, bass, drums). Musicians demonstrate their instruments and discuss their role within the ensemble. Introduction to wind instruments - Demonstration of woodwind and/or brass instruments. Improvisation - Presented in an accessible format whereby a simple children's song is played and improvised on. Jazz styles - Various jazz styles (New Orleans Dixieland, Ragtime, Be-bop, Modern, etc.) are presented through excerpts of classic standards. Latin and Brazilian rhythms - Performance of Latin jazz and bossa-nova. Features audience participation using accessory percussion instruments. Fusion - Jazz styles are combined with contemporary rhythms such as funk, and hip-hop.

The close relationship between the drummer and dancer is explored using examples ranging from traditional African dance to hip-hop. The concept of art forms (drumming and dancing) as a means of communication is introduced. Latin American dances such as the Cuban Cha-Cha, the Brazilian Samba and the Merengue from Santo Domingo accompanied by typical percussion instruments reinforce the African connection. This program offers many opportunities for group participation culminating in a Conga line involving the whole audience.
