Join Carol Parenzan Smalley, a civil engineer focusing on underground investigations and a published children's author of non-fiction books, as you explore underground construction by animals and humans. Parents and children will work together using STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) skills to "engineer" a 3-D "star" book depicting scenes from the underground. Smalley will share information about the science behind underground explorations and her latest works-in-progress.

You can make a difference. In this workshop, students discover steps their families can take to shrink their carbon footprints. With a degree in environmental engineering, Carol guides students in an engaging conversation about green living. To celebrate their green esteem, each student makes an earth card using paper-engineering (pop-up) techniques. (Shh! It’s math!) Green Esteem is a program based on the trickle up theory. Carol Parenzan Smalley is the author of Tell Your Parents: Green Changes You Can Make Around the Home, fresh off the press in 2009 by Mitchell Lane Publishers, a leader in education publishing. She holds a degree in environmental engineering from Penn State and has written over 20 books. Libraries hosting the program receive a free, signed, personalized copy of the book to add to their collection.

The Hero Within: Writing Your Life Story History,

Carol Smalley is the author of two books about heroes. Born and raised in Hershey (PA), the Chocolatetown native was asked to create two books about the founders -- Milton S. Hershey and Catherine Hershey -- of the town and school for orphans, which later became the Milton Hershey School. For her picture book, she parallels the life of a red oak tree and the 100-year history of the school. For middle grade students, she creates a journal-style book written by an 8th-grade boy and set in 1977-78, when girls were first admitted to the school. For her workshop, she guides participants in writing their own life stories, using either story technique.

How big does an oak tree grow? In this workshop, Carol shares a story within a story. In The Growing Story of Milton Hershey School, students observe the growth of a tree on a hill overlooking the town of Hershey (PA). While the tree grows, so does the community, park, chocolate factory, and a special school. Students use the book as a starting point to write their own growing stories, where they parallel the growth of a plant with the history of their community, school, or family.
