Arm-of-the-Sea, Theater City That Drinks the Mountain Sky History,
Nature- Environment,
Performing Arts- Puppetry
The epic story of water for New York City, told in the elemental beauty of mask & puppet theatre. Heralded as one of the wonders of the world, New York City's ingenious system of aqueducts and reservoirs provides clear mountain water from the Catskills to nine million downstate residents. And though the struggle over these water resources has, at times, bitterly divided city managers and watershed residents, it has also irrevocably united them. Through a shimmering tapestry of poetry, puppetry and evocative music, City that Drinks the Mountain Sky brings alive the lyrical landscape of the Catskills— to portray the on-going story of the watershed and the uneasy marriage of those who must protect its vulnerable flowing treasure. You can expect plenty of visual punch and timely wit as the Hudson Valley's premier eco-logic theater traces life's quintessential liquid from mountain top to city tap. Study guide and post performance discussion provided for school audiences. Photos and video available at www.armofthesea.org

Sometimes the key to self expression is to listen. Percussionist Jeff Haynes creates an array of percussive landscapes, to help writers heighten their awareness and sensitivity to the rhythm and the range of their inner voice. Over the course of this two day writing and performance workshop, participants will be engaged in various exercises and discussions to help them connect Jeff’s percussive textures with their inner voice. They will see first hand how percussion can bring out different inflections in their writing and delivery. The workshop invites participants to bring their poems to perform with Jeff and/or come with an open mind, ready to write and perform something inspired by the sessions. As participants listen to Jeff play, they will become in-tune with the “voice” of the rhythm. Participants will be challenged to allow their writing and performances to reflect on: how the rhythm makes them feel; where does it take them; and what their inner voice will say in return. Each participant will perform with Jeff.
