Here is the third and perhaps best entry on my long running War & Cinema series. This time out we explore WWII as seen through the eyes of the Japanese, Italian and German perspective. We do this by looking at their propaganda; exploring newsreels, cartoons, and various other forms of entertainment designed to keep their public actively involved in the war effort, and of course extolling the virtues of their causes. Whether it be the Die for your Country cries of the Japanese, or the inspire your nation into unity that will obey slogan of Italian Fascism, or the xenophobic warnings of imperialist invaders ruining the purity of race extolled by the Germans, this program is the ultimate examination of what our enemies were thinking during WWII.

Academy award winning actor Jimmy Stewart is known as a leading man in films such as It’s a Wonderful Life and the Glenn Miller Story. He was also nominated for an Oscar in the Army Air Force recruiting film Winning Your Wings. Stewart served as Commander of the 445th Bomb Group completing 20 bombing missions and retiring as a Brigadier General. Join us as we explore the military careers of Jimmy Stewart and Clark Gable and view Gregory Peck lead the 918th Bomb Group deep into Germany in the Oscar-winning film 12 o’clock High. Presenter: Rick Feingold teaches “The Air Force in World War II” at Bergen Community College.

Vincent Price was a box office draw with his horror films of the 1950's, 60's and 70's. But many never realized that Price was being groomed for more romantic leading parts in such films as The Song of Bernadette and Laura. This program focuses on the career of Vincent Price, from his early years in Hollywood to his later years working with the notorious American International Pictures and finally his rediscovery at the hands of filmmaker Tim Burton. A combination of DVD and film presentation, we also get a look at some rare pressbooks and posters used to advertise Price's pictures, this program is the ultimate testament to one of Hollywood's greatest talents.

Jay supplies dominos, popsicle sticks, magnets, rubber bands, string, balls, marbles, etc…, set up includes Jay’s basic table and floor-based templates as well as some pre-constructed machines for kids to study and play with, with plenty of opportunities for making, and learning from, their own mistakes. Goofy fun, and real engineering, with a bit of Rube Goldberg history thrown into the mix.

William Castle was the ultimate film promotion artist of the 1950's. Anyone who's ever seen House on Haunted Hill (1958), The Tingler (1959), 13 Ghosts (1960) will attest to this. Emergo- The skeleton flying over the audiences who paid to see House on Haunted Hill, movie theater seats wired with a minor electrical voltage to give the audience of the Tingler the sensation that the Tingler itself was crawling up on them, or even the special glasses you needed to put on in order to see the ghosts in 13 Ghosts. Castle knew how to sell a picture and keep audiences coming back for more. This program will give you a complete history of William Castles, from his humble beginnings right through his pioneer horror pictures of the 1950's and finally to his acceptance by the art-house crowd for his production of Rosemary's Baby. Includes film memorabilia and a selection of trailers from Castles work via DVD. A perfect show for the Halloween season. NEW 2012

A traveler who explores the beautiful Aegean coastline of Turkey, known in antiquity as Asia Minor, will find some of the most spectacular ruined cities of the ancient Greeks. Anthropologist and Photographer Barry Kass' photos and descriptions will take the audience to such places as Miletus, Pergamon, and Ephesus, as well as the mystical Temple of Apollo at Didyma. We will also explore the site of ancient Troy, including a replica of the Trojan Horse, described in Homer's Iliad. The international city of Istanbul, known during Byzantine times as Constantinople, will provide us will an incredible variety of photogenic scenes, including views of the city from the Golden Horn of the Bosporus straits, the Haghia Sophia Church, Topkapi Palace, and the Blue Mosque of Sultan Ahmet I.

For you lovers of vintage comedy, there can be no finer a comedy team than the Marx Brothers, a zany trio of real life brothers who gave a whole new meaning to the word funny. With the Marx Brothers being masters of both visual and verbal humor, the audience will regale in laughter as we view clips of the Marx Brothers and view a documentary on their careers. Then the audience will enjoy an educational history of the trio as explained through lecture and memorabilia. This is a 90 minute program complete with a DVD presentation.
