Their educational programming has reached over 50,000 students in schools, libraries, and cultural centers throughout the West. Their family program was featured in Californian venues such as Herbst Theater, Mexican Heritage Plaza and the Lobero Theater. "Cascada de Flores explores the musical traditions of Mexico and Cuba with grace and sensitivity. Their music is strongly rooted in folkloric forms, yet they steer clear of anachronistic mimicry of the past, instead interpreting their repertoire in their own subtle way. The result is rich, delicate, and lovely." Sing Out! Magazine

SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER: SOPHIE SCHOLL AND THE WHITE ROSE - ROLE MODELS IN THE FIGHT FOR FREEDOM TODAY is based on Dr. Newborn's new book, SOPHIE SCHOLL AND THE WHITE ROSE, which tells the entire story behind the Oscar-nominated German film, Sophie Scholl: The Final Days. Using music, historical images and dramatic story telling, Dr. Newborn recounts the inspiring story of courageous German Christian university students, some former Hitler Youth fanatics, who transformed remarkably to become the greatest heroes of the German anti-Nazi resistance. Dr. Newborn conveys the importance of the White Rose as role models--while presenting a multicultural array of special people he calls White Rosers today who risk themselves in the fight for freedom and our shared humanity. The ultimate message, whether for audience of all ages: be UPstanders, not BYstanders!

Benas, Jeanne Lightening Likenesses- caricatures by Jeanne A Benas Performing Arts- Other,
Visual Arts- Drawing,
Visual Arts- Cartooning
I draw quick, 3-minute color caricatures of the people in the audience. I can draw between 15- 20 people per hour. These are done in pastel on 11"x17" paper, and rolled and tied with a colorful ribbon. I can pre-print my paper with a logo or a little body for themed events. It serves not only as something fun to watch for everyone, but also as a souvenir of the event for each person I draw. Caricatures can easily accompany other events, or can stand by themselves for a kind of learning experience.

!, Spook Handy Passing Along the Folk Music Tradition History,
Music,
Performing Arts- Other
For generations children grew up singing with the whole family, at large gatherings, at school or in their churches. Before the advent of radio, TV and the internet this was the primary form of entertainment. Today, however, many people are worried that this centuries-old tradition is being deleted from the hard drive of the modern human experience. Along with that, society is losing one of the most powerful tools for building strong families and strong communities. This program is simple. Let’s make sure our kids know some of the treasures of American Folk Music. Singing old favorites like This Land is Your Land, If I had a Hammer, I’ve been Working on the Railroad, She'll be coming Around the Mountain and maybe some newer songs. If the children don’t already know a song we’ll take the time to teach them. Parents are encouraged to sit with their children and help them learn the songs. An excellent program for Libraries, Arts Centers, Churches, Schools and other meeting places. Pete Seeger covers some of Spook's songs and the two perform together several times per year. Visit www.spookhandy.com for more info on the artist and other programs and workshops.

Starting with a folk tale from the small island nation of Haiti, I will take students on an imaginary journey across the Atlantic, where they will meet characters commonly found in European and African folklore. We will continue our journey around the globe, with a stop in Asia, then the South Seas and finally back home to the United States. As we travel, we will talk about why people tell stories, and explore why similar stories appear in a different cultures around the world. During the 30-60 minute concert (program length and repertoire adjustable to suit your scheduling and curricular needs), listeners will be active participants in the program, both as an audience who delights in the magic of stories and songs from such a wide variety of cultures, and as “explorers” who help me answer questions about the tradition of storytelling and the stories themselves. At turns hilarious and serious, Story Laurie magically glides from one character to the next, employing her marvelous vocal skills, gestures and facial expressions. Perfect for libraries, schools and community events -- Laurie has a knack for enchanting both young and old equally!
