Film Noir - The Dark Underbelly of Hollywood: History,
Media- Film,
Visual Arts- Other
In the years following WWII, many filmmakers began making movies that represented the seedier and uglier realities of life. Gone was the cinema of wine and roses, and in its place rose an imagery of dark alleys, mysterious shadows and hidden motives. This type of cinema, which actually has its roots deep in German Expressionism, is exemplified by the use of black and white film and stark lighting. And at the center of the visuals is the overall message that life is NOT what it seems, and the outcome can be dire and drastic. We will immerse ourselves in a world of chiaroscuro, and when we emerge we'll have a greater understanding of the importance of film noir and its effects upon current cinematic output. See clips from such classics as Double Indemnity (1944), Laura (1944), Nightmare Alley (1947), Touch of Evil (1958), and many, many more.

Lon Chaney Sr - Man of a Thousand Faces and More!: History,
Media- Film,
Performing Arts- Theater
Perhaps one of the least spoken about talents from the golden days of silent Hollywood film productions, Lon Chaney's influence on modern Hollywood make-up effects is second to none. Not only was he a fantastic make-up man, he was also one of the best actors of his time, very often choosing to underplay a part rather than go for the typical theatrics that punctuated the bulk of the performances from that era. Chaney had a smooth style all his own, and proved he could play just about any role handed to him which in turn, kept him from being typecast. Join us as we watch clips from some of Chaney's work including classics such as Phantom of the Opera (1925), The Unholy Three (1925), Tell it to the Marines (1926), and many more. This would make a great double booking with my Lon Chaney Jr. presentation. Perfect for the Halloween season!

The highlight of this program is a 16mm showing of a rare Honeymooners episode title Hello Mom (which aired December 3, 1955). Find out about Gleason, Art Carney, Audrey Meadows, Joyce Randolf and the behind the scene stories of the show itself. Bound to be a very popular program, so book now!
