Fall Fire, based on a Native American myth, tells how a friendly beaver painted the trees with autumn's fiery colors. Celebrate fall and New England with this enchanting seasonal performance. 'Thank You for your performance of ‘Tall Fall Tales’ at the Mansfield Public Library last month. The stories were wonderful, and wonderfully presented, with just the right blend of humor, action, and reverence for nature. The audience was entranced. Open Hand Theater creates original performances based on the performance traditions of cultures around the world. Grandfather Frost weaves his magic through the Russian forest in a tale spun by Baba Yaga and her mischievous cat. Featuring Vladimir Vasyagin, our international artist in residence from Tomsk, Siberia, this traditional story introduces Russian heritage through its folk characters, music and unique style of puppetry.

Superfluous Scientific Trivia A fun look at the world of science. Ventriloquist Bruce Weaver discovers that "Rocket Scientist" Edgar doesn't really know much about science So Bruce and the rest of pals show him some of the Fun Scientific Facts they have learned by reading books in the library. Shasta Petals (The SunFlower) will explain the amazing process of Photosynthesis. Stewart the Dragon will demonstrate what he has learned about meteorology. Audience volunteers will help demonstrate Physical and Chemical Changes in matter as well as the fact that our cells contain lots of Water. Other Cast members will explore ways we use science every day. The show, which includes ventriloquism, music, and magic, will run about 45 minutes and is geared for great family fun.

Dig deep into a cave of the earth--the Sun has been captured by a Fearsome Dragon and hidden away. The HERO of our tale is Bawshou, a young man who courageously rises to the challenge of freeing the Sun. With the help of a golden phoenix, a small parcel of earth, a magic robe, and a heroic dream, Bawshou travels afar to seek out and rescue the Sun, for the good of his people and all the land. Children actively participate as they portray the flowing river, the sounds of the sea, the playing of the gong, the dancing stars, and much much more! The artists evoke a magical atmosphere in this important Chinese tale, employing authentic oriental techniques and traditions including stylized dramatic forms and movement, mythology, exotic costumes, and unusual musical sounds. Chinese folk instruments (erhu, p’i p’a, guzheng harp, sona, Chinese Theatre drum, flutes & whistles, and gong) are featured, combining to make this unforgettable performance piece a joyous celebration of oriental culture. 'Bawshou' was commissioned by the Springfield MA Museum of Fine Arts in 1994. (see accompanying Chinese Dragon Mask Workshop/Parade).
