Emily Dickinson’s life comes alive in "My Business is to Sing!" as the poet delves into her home life, her relationships with her family, friends and love interests. Emily reveals her innermost passion for words, acknowledging that writing and poetry are her life. Dialogue melds into song and back to dialogue as Emily reflects on her life from age 9 to 24. Much has happened to mold her into the writer she is and will be. Developed and created by Barbara Dana and Kathleen Shimeta, the dialogue is based on Ms. Dana’s book, "A Voice of Her Own." Song settings of Miss Dickinson’s poems include the works of composers Martin Hennessy, Aaron Copland, Drew Heminger, Michael Conley, Ricky Ian Gordon, Vincent Persichetti and William Roy. My Business is to Sing! is offered as a performance with Barbara Dana and Kathleen Shimeta with Martin Hennessy, pianist. The program may also be presented with two additional professional actors from the area of the performance. These two actors would play multiple characters within the dialogue.
