| San Souci, Robert | A Writer’s Journey Into World Literature |
Literature- Creative Writing, Literature- Authors, Multicultural- Other |
Using slides, a lively look at the author’s journey from aspiring writer in elementary school to award-winning author of over 100 books. He discusses publishing his first book with his brother Daniel, an illustrator, with whom he continues to collaborate. The presentation takes a detailed look at the process of creating both picture book text and collections of stories for older readers – many based on traditional tales from world literature. The author describes the research and writing process behind his adaptations of tales from world literature, many focusing on female-centered narratives. He outlines how he assures cultural and historical accuracy, and works with illustrators to assure visual accuracy. Referencing tales from around the country and the world, he examines how these stories “open a window” on other times, places, peoples, and world views. He stresses these tales affirm the richness of individual cultures, while revealing common threads that link all human minds and hearts. Using several of his books such as The Talking Eggs, Two Bear Cubs, and Fa Mulan, the basis for the Disney film, Mulan, for which he wrote the screen adaptation, he offers insights into the art of story creation. Multicultural- Other, Music, Performing Arts- Dance |

Everyone gets involved – from ages 2 to 102 (especially those who have not danced before) -- in easy-to-learn American barn dance favorites: circles, squares, contras, as well as folk dances from around the world, like Ireland, Russia, Turkey, Israel, Tahiti, Mexico, France, Scandinavia, China and Africa.
The toe-tapping tunes consist of reels, jigs, polkas, hornpipes and waltzes. Instruments may include fiddle, banjo, flute, pennywhistle, clarinet, guitar, piano, recorder, percussion, and more. While participation in the dancing is encouraged -- it's hard to sit still -- it's also fun to just watch and listen to the music.
This program helps children develop an awareness of our traditional way of life - when people lived without electricity and had to make their own entertainment - and discusses the origins, sounds and uses of traditional instruments. The Family Dance usually includes a short sit-down period to talk about the dancing, music, instruments, and cultures.

| Rogers, Robert | Professor Pennywhistle and the Round the World Story Balloon |
Multicultural- Other, Performing Arts- Theater, Performing Arts- Puppetry |
Imagine a magical balloon that knows when and how to touch down in the most exotic places right in the middle of a story, just at the most important moment. This is the invention of Professor Pennywhistle, whose curiosity and enthusiasm about exploring the world takes him - and us - to the most surprising places. It's a celebration of diversity - and more important - the common things that people share all around the globe.
We'll visit the arid landscape of Africa, where the animals must remember the name of a tree that will drop its fruit only if they can shout it out loud; the Palace of the Emperor of China, who has lost his best friend - a nightingale - and doesn't know what to do; a little cottage in the woods of France, where an elderly woman learns the secret of a soup made from only a stone. And finally, we'll return to the good old U.S.A. and meet Pecos Bill, America's first cowboy, and help him lasso a wild tornado.
We live in a big, wide, wonderful world, and Professor Pennywhistle is more than happy to be our tour guide.
