RiverJack’s( comprises one-third of The Zucchini Brothers ) highly engaging style motivates students to participate actively in the creative process. Through dynamic performance, demonstration, and audience participation, RiverJack provides an introduction to the processes of looping, songwriting, and recording, and leaves participants with a finished product that they are proud to call their own. RiverJack uses “loop” (live recording) technology to achieve a full band sound by layering percussion, bass, acoustic guitars, harmonica,trumpet and vocals.
During a 60- to 75-minute session, participants will explore the craft of songwriting by writing and recording a song that is uniquely their own, based on a theme or curriculum-related topic. They will work cooperatively to form a musical composition by: brainstorming ideas, writing lyrics, composing a melody, and gaining personal experience with the creative process. The song is then rehearsed and recorded, and the library will receive a CD/mp3 containing the participants’ song.

Daniel Kirk is the author/illustrator of thirty books for children, including the best-selling title Library Mouse. He will make up to four presentations in the course of a school day, with time for signing books. In a 45 minute to one hour session, he shares details of the work of an author and illustrator, showing prepatory sketches, text editing as well as finished manuscripts and artwork. He reads at least two picture books after showing how they were developed, talks about his life as an author and how he went from being a child interested in art and comic books to his current career. He shares poems and songs from his books of poetry about dogs and cats, and leads children and their teachers in a drawing game to develop characters and ideas for their own stories, like his character in the book Library Mouse. He welcomes questions from the audience at the end of a session, time permitting.
