Kuhn, Lindsay Butterfly Release Nature- Animals,
Nature- Gardening,
Visual Arts- Crafts
Everyone loves butterflies, especially up close and personal. They are a medium that unlocks the heart of angry teenagers, and are able to coax the shyest of children out of their shells. When there is a butterfly release in town, people literally drop everything to attend. The day of the event students learn how to identify host and nectar plants, what Monarch eggs, larvae, and pupal forms look like; how to tell a male from female and why the males have pheromone pouches on their wings. There is much discussion on native butterflies in NY and identifying specimens patrons have observed. Releases attract the attention of the local media, and are great publicity. I am planning on stocking Monarch, Painted Lady, Mourning Cloak, Eastern Black Swallowtail, and Red Admiral Butterflies this season. Wild-caught displays (not always available) might include Eastern Tailed Blue, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Clouded Sulphur, Cabbage White, White Admiral, and Baltimore Checkerspot. This program is suitable for the 2008 Summer Reading Program Catch a Bug @ Your Local Library.
