**Space Phenomena** Probe the mysteries of meteors and bounce around satellite light in this phenomenal program on space events! See comets up close as one is formed before your eyes, and take home your very own “Mad Science Catch-a-Comet”. Mad Science Enrichment Programs are fun explorations into science and technology, and they encourage informal learning through hands-on experience. All Mad Science workshops include a lot of fascinating equipment, supplies, and take-home materials which the children build themselves. The Mad Science mission is to spark the imagination and curiosity of children everywhere by providing them with fun, entertaining, and educational activities which instill a clear understanding of what science really is, and how it affects the world around them.

Although reptiles may seem creepy to some, to know them is to love them! Participants will learn the characteristics of a reptile and be able to identify members of the snake, lizard, turtle and crocodile families. Particular themes such as “The Class of Reptiles,” Desert vs. Tropical Adaptations” or “Careers with Animals” are available. This program can be modified to suit mandated curricular needs. Adams, Lori How to Write a Non-Fiction Book Media- Photography,

In this author visit, Lori Adams, presents the story of the creation of the children’s non-fiction book “Triops – a very unusual creature” from the development of the idea, collaboration between two authors, research involved, raising of Triops, writing involved and layout and printing of the book. Using the book as an example, she will highlight the typical structures used by authors in non-fiction writing (table of contents, glossary, index etc.) She will highlight pages that illustrate non-fiction conventions in expository writing such as description, comparison, cause and effect, and problem and solution. Triops or other acquatic creatures will be displayed for observation. As the photographer, she will explain how she captured the life cycle of Triops from hatching eggs through death of these creatures in both her kitchen and professional studio. She will demonstrate how photographs are taken with a professional set. Using the digital process, she shoots directly to a computer and images are projected for all to see. She will explain how she selects photographs, and interprets draft text. Samples of close-up photography of other creatures – butterflies, caterpillars, newts are also presented. Images created during the visit will be emailed to the librarians.

Mad Science, Mad Science of Long Island Acids and Bases (Hands-On Workshop) Other,

**Acids and Bases** Uncover the secrets of chemistry and the effects acids and bases have on our daily lives! Test common household items with Litmus Paper to determine acidity & alkalinity levels. You will also learn how to make a CO2 fire extinguisher, and watch as a test tube pops using an acid and a base! Mad Science Enrichment Programs are fun explorations into science and technology, and they encourage informal learning through hands-on experience. All Mad Science workshops include a lot of fascinating equipment, supplies, and take-home materials which the children build themselves. The Mad Science mission is to spark the imagination and curiosity of children everywhere by providing them with fun, entertaining, and educational activities which instill a clear understanding of what science really is, and how it affects the world around them.

1, Mad Science Harnessing Heat Science
Students will be introduced to the concepts of heat and heat transfer. They will be treated to six interactive demonstrations and four entertaining and educational hands-on activities. The class will learn and observe the basic properties of heat by play-acting the role of atoms, as well as, observing the effects and behavior of warm air and water. The children will witness a tea bag rocket-launch, a gravity defying candle-lighting and even take part in a sense-confusing temperature test.

Long Island Science Center, The Place for Learning IN THE MIND'S EYE Light, Color & Optics Science
Learn how your eye perceives light. Experiment with how light can be reflected, refracted and filtered through lenses, prisms and spectrometers. (Older children will use optics lab benches to perform experiment.) Program can be tailored to younger grades as needed. Make an optics craft to take home. 4th - 9th grade.

Long Island Science Center, The Place for Learning INSECTS Nature- Other,
Science
Students examine the world of insects, including life cycles, form and function with models, specimens and living creatures. Each child receives a live cricket and builds a habitat to nurture and observe his/her cricket. (Notify us upon registration if you prefer a class set of crickets or one for each student.)
