Did you know that plants can grow from cuttings and not just seeds? Would you like to learn how to graft scions and choose root stocks? What hormonal treatments or media should be used to encourage growth, and what is the science behind it? Maybe you do not possess a green thumb, but always dreamed of having a beautiful garden. This program will inspire young and old alike to collect coleus, jade, violet, and other easy to propagate plants, and dive into citrus and other exotics to enrich their lives and give everyone the opportunity to grow an amazing garden. Participants may bring home cuttings and seeds to sow at home or in the vacant lot next door. Using supplied river stones, acrylic paints and brushes, create a set of ladybugs on a leaf, bee on a flower or use your own imagination to make the creature of your choice! Reference materials will be supplied along with information regarding the habitat of ladybugs and honeybees.

The swamps are alive with the music of all the creatures that inhabit it. The children will take an imaginary, musical trip through the swamp and meet many of these creatures through songs, finger plays, and stories. They will take turns playing frog guiros (a special musical instrument) and make their own music with cricket clickers.

Have you ever wondered how ancient people told time? Got from point A to point B without a smart phone or compass? Made it over the underground railroad, or to far away countries over the seven seas? Learn about Nathaniel Bowditch, the father of modern navigation and how he taught illiterate men to calculate from and follow the stars. Learn which constellations matter most in the northern and southern hemispheres. Best of all, take home a star map and learn how to participate in orientiering and other activities in your own neighborhood. From the banks of the Amazon River to the heart of the West African jungle, Rainforest Legends brings to life favorite folktales and songs about the animals and plants of these lands. Legends tell how the Amazon Birds grew feathers as brilliant as the colors of the rainbow, why three Invisible Hunters came to haunt the Nicaraguan rainforest, and how Jabuti the tortoise tricked the Amazon monster Kibungo into sparing the lives of three-toed frog, jaguar and monkey. For schools different Rainforest Legends performances are available for K-2 and 3-6th grade. Each performancevcomes with an extensive curriculum package, which includes both science-based and language-based activities. I am a geologist, and I travel around the US collecting dinosaur fossils. In this program I explain how I locate the fossils, and the types of fossils that can be found. During the talk, I will show samples of my fossils including teeth, bones, footprints, eggshells, gastroliths, coprolites and amber.
