| Aleandri, Emelise | Italian-American Theatre |
Literature- Other, Music, Performing Arts- Theater |
Frizzi & Lazzi (which means “sparkling theatre”) is a music and theatre company of professional actors, singers and musicians dedicated to reviving the musical and theatrical entertainments performed by Italian-American immigrants at the turn of the last century. The body of work from which productions are adapted includes original plays, songs and skits by Italian-American writers and composers, as well as traditional theatre and music from the Italian repertory, all of which were performed on the stages of Little Italies around the United States. Our actors and performers dress in period costumes, and speak and sing in both English and Italian during performances to make the material accessible to everyone, and still retain the flavor of the original Italian. Our musical and theatrical material is ideal for your social and educational organizations and makes Italian cultural events and celebrations a success! Frizzi & Lazzi can also include variety type entertainments: such as, jugglers, acrobats, magicians, folk dancers, puppeteers, etc. The company also conducts workshops and provides educational lectures with video or audio presentations on various aspects of Italian and Italian-American culture: Carnevale - Masks - Italian-American Theatre - Italian Festivals - Pulcinella.

| San Souci, Robert | A Writer’s Journey Into World Literature |
Literature- Creative Writing, Literature- Authors, Multicultural- Other |
Using slides, a lively look at the author’s journey from aspiring writer in elementary school to award-winning author of over 100 books. He discusses publishing his first book with his brother Daniel, an illustrator, with whom he continues to collaborate. The presentation takes a detailed look at the process of creating both picture book text and collections of stories for older readers – many based on traditional tales from world literature. The author describes the research and writing process behind his adaptations of tales from world literature, many focusing on female-centered narratives. He outlines how he assures cultural and historical accuracy, and works with illustrators to assure visual accuracy. Referencing tales from around the country and the world, he examines how these stories “open a window” on other times, places, peoples, and world views. He stresses these tales affirm the richness of individual cultures, while revealing common threads that link all human minds and hearts. Using several of his books such as The Talking Eggs, Two Bear Cubs, and Fa Mulan, the basis for the Disney film, Mulan, for which he wrote the screen adaptation, he offers insights into the art of story creation. Q&A at the end.
