| San Souci, Robert | A Writer’s Journey Into World Literature |
Literature- Creative Writing, Literature- Authors, Multicultural- Other |
Using slides, a lively look at the author’s journey from aspiring writer in elementary school to award-winning author of over 100 books. He discusses publishing his first book with his brother Daniel, an illustrator, with whom he continues to collaborate. The presentation takes a detailed look at the process of creating both picture book text and collections of stories for older readers – many based on traditional tales from world literature. The author describes the research and writing process behind his adaptations of tales from world literature, many focusing on female-centered narratives. He outlines how he assures cultural and historical accuracy, and works with illustrators to assure visual accuracy. Referencing tales from around the country and the world, he examines how these stories “open a window” on other times, places, peoples, and world views. He stresses these tales affirm the richness of individual cultures, while revealing common threads that link all human minds and hearts. Using several of his books such as The Talking Eggs, Two Bear Cubs, and Fa Mulan, the basis for the Disney film, Mulan, for which he wrote the screen adaptation, he offers insights into the art of story creation. Q&A at the end.

| Goldstein, Dana | Lady of Copper, the musical story of the Statue of Liberty and Immigration |
History, Multicultural- Other, Performing Arts- Theater |
Lady of Copper is the musical story of the Statue of Liberty and Emma Lazarus, the poet who composed the inspiring words on the statue's base "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free..." This show celebrates immigration and the diversity that makes America strong. Now in its 9th year, this original musical has been called "the best arts-in-education assembly we have ever had" (Arts Coordinator), "a great way to celebrate the values of America" (New York Times), and "a poignant reminder of everything for which we should be thankful" (Big Apple Parent). Geared for students in grades K-6, this fun and educational production is a perfect addition to any American History curriculum. In recent years, many schools have chosen the show as an educational and uplifting way to commemorate September 11th. Lady of Copper is also appropriate for Black History Month, Women's History Month, Memorial Day, July 4th and other holiday celebrations.

| McIntosh, Story Laurie | 2011 One World, Many Stories - Around the World... |
Multicultural- Other, Music, Performing Arts- Storytelling |
Once upon a time, a young fellow named Jack grew a cabbage so enormous, he decided to see if he could sail it across the open sea. He could! And so he did. . .And so begins “Around the World in An Afternoon”,
a musical storytelling adventure that will transport your library audience to lands both near and far. Within the frame story of Jack sailing on his cabbage (based on an old story dreamed up by Pete Seeger long ago), Story Laurie takes listeners on an imaginary journey that begins in your library’s backyard. The audience will sail south to the small island nation of Haiti, to hear a traditional folk tale. Then they will set sail across the Atlantic, where they will meet characters commonly found in European and African folklore. We then continue our journey around the globe, with a stop in Asia, then the South Seas and finally back home to the United States...singing songs, telling tales, off we go!
