Using slides, a lively look at the author’s journey from aspiring writer in elementary school to award-winning author of over 100 books. He discusses publishing his first book with his brother Daniel, an illustrator, with whom he continues to collaborate. The presentation takes a detailed look at the process of creating both picture book text and collections of stories for older readers – many based on traditional tales from world literature. The author describes the research and writing process behind his adaptations of tales from world literature, many focusing on female-centered narratives. He outlines how he assures cultural and historical accuracy, and works with illustrators to assure visual accuracy. Referencing tales from around the country and the world, he examines how these stories “open a window” on other times, places, peoples, and world views. He stresses these tales affirm the richness of individual cultures, while revealing common threads that link all human minds and hearts. Using several of his books such as The Talking Eggs, Two Bear Cubs, and Fa Mulan, the basis for the Disney film, Mulan, for which he wrote the screen adaptation, he offers insights into the art of story creation.
