This program offers a three step approach for audience members to seek out literature that interests them as a catalyst to creating intrinsic motivation to read. The steps are: 1. Evaluate what things you are interested in as a person. 2. Research what resources are available to help you find literature that covers those interests. 3. Seek out the people that can help you acquire that material. (Librarians, parents, teachers, friends, etc.) This message is reinforced with award-winning original children's music and contemporary popular music.

Story Laurie introduces students to the art of storytelling and walks them through the process of preparing their own folk tale or fable for the telling. In the workshop sessions, storytelling and improve games help the students develop useful storytelling skills such as developing eye contact and use of gesture and voice. The artist teaches students to learn their story by developing imagery and creating a storyboard, rather than through rote memorization. In grades 3 & up, students work individually or with a partner; for grades K-2, students learn a group tale to share with other groups or classes.

A Fire in My Heart: Kurdish Folktales: Based around Diane's new book of Kurdish folktales, this program introduces students and families to this pivotal Middle Eastern culture. Diane will present Kurdish stories she collected firsthand including The Lie a humorous story about a tall tale contest between an Uncle and his nephew, Fatima, the Kurdish Cinderella story and tales of how the moon and the Milky Way came to be. A map, anecdotes of her collecting experience and traditional dress and dance round out our exploration of this little known culture. Notice in the Salem News-2007 'How fun and exciting to have you visit Pine Point School! And, I have to tell you that I have heard such wonderful comments since the assembly. You inspired questions and comments all over campus and you were a hit with both students and faculty alike. Ross, Dave How a Book is Born Literature- Authors
This presentation may be modified for any age level. Items covered: where book ideas come from, how to develop an idea into a concept, sell the concept to a publisher and work with an editor and/or art director to create a picture book. The presentation includes many examples of work, artifacts and interesting bits of publishing history created by Dave Ross. This behind the scenes look at children's literature, includes many concepts useful to young writers (such as the role of the first draft in shaping the final product). However, facts and information about picture books are intertwined with humorous anecdotes to entertain as well as educate. After seeing this program, attendees will understand how much unseen work goes into writing and illustrating.

Pattysaurus in which selfish Patty becomes so obsessed with her dinosaur collection that she turns into a gigantic sauropod herself and Egg Mountain in which the audience helps out on this surprise filled journey that leads to the discovery of Egg Mountain and Maiasaura, the first dinosaur known to care for its young. Based on current scientific discoveries, this piece educates as it entertains.

Sayles, Elizabeth Make a Picture Book with Elizabeth Sayles Literature- Creative Writing,

This in-class workshop is presented by award-winning and best-selling picture book illustrator and author, Elizabeth Sayles. It begins with a demonstration of how a picture book is made, from typed manuscript to thumbnail sketches, the dummy book, revisions, final sketches, final art and finally arriving at a printed and bound book. Workshop attendees will create their own stories and illustrate them using props and toys (provided in the workshop) and a lot of imagination. They will be creating the thumbnail sketches for their own picture book! To create illustrations for a book, artists need to develop drawing skills and craftsmanship. They use pencils, paint, pastels, paper and canvas and other media. But they also use memory, imagination, observation skills to help come up with the ideas for the pictures and stories. This workshop can be for age groups ranging from 2nd grade - adult

With her keen sense of dialog, Pamela inhabits characters from many parts of the world. Students travel from one country to another, discovering how traditional folk tales connect us all. Favorites include The Magic Orange Tree and other Haitian tales, Anansi stories (including African, Jamaican and North American versions), native American tales, and extraordinary selections from Europe and Asia.
