Chickens are fascinating to kids, just ask my daughter Vienna as she walks around with one on her shoulder. Bring real live leashed chickens into your library for a fun filled, cluckingly good time! This program features chickens from around the world; Speckled Sussex from England, Blue Andalusians from Spain, Glossy Black Sumatras, Araucana from South America, Cuckoo Maran from France, and others who lay different colors and sizes of eggs. Learn the history and unique characteristics of these breeds, along with basic animal husbandry skills. Children can pet the chickens and depending on the season we bring baby chicks along. Sugaring Off - Making Maple Syrup Life Skills- Food,

Science
Learn how to tap maple trees properly, different methods with pros and cons. How to store and process sap, measure brix, and grade maple products. Science of sugar discussed, with chemistry. Best of all, live demonstration with partially boiled sap to reduce waiting time, kids can watch syrup finish and taste when cool as sugar on snow. May be done any time of year, ice shavings can substitute for snow in summer. Angora rabbits provide the softest fiber for spinning, and enjoy being groomed to remove their long continuously growing coats. After making their very own drop spindle, patrons get to brush rabbits to collect fiber. Then they can spin the softest yarn for themselves and bring it home. Learn proper rabbit care and maintenance, along with information on how to manage your own angora rabbit farm. Laura Ingalls Day is a compilation of programs normally taught in a 1 hour block, designed for a kickoff or finale to summer reading, or an event that will bring in patrons during the winter. Starting with sugaring off, we will make sugar on snow, then move onto fresh butter, cheese, and sourdough bread. Next we will plant a garden on the library grounds or start transplants for growing on the windowsill. We can wash up with home made old fashioned lye soap, and hand dip candles. Wrap it all up by meeting farm animals and learning to care for them just like Laura and Mary. Based on book: Little House in the Big Woods, by Laura Ingalls Wilder, this program can incorporate reading the book and eating between stations. The program can last 4-8 hours, depending on age group and individual or combinations of stations. Old Fashioned Soap Making Life Skills- Other,

Learn to make soap the old fashioned way! This program allows participants to craft their own soap with a variety of molds and natural additions such as hibiscus flowers, jojoba, lavender, vanilla beans, the sky is the limit! This program is tailored to your library audience. For younger children can use a melt and pour soap, and older teens can watch a demonstration of the chemical reaction between lye and lipids. This fits nicely with Laura Ingalls Wilder's 'Little House' books, and some libraries use it as the finale to a story time featuring one to give patrons a real life experience. Learn to dip candles just like Laura Ingalls did in Little House on the Prairie. Participants are able to choose wax colors, scents, and shapes of candles, and may choose to hand dip or use candle molds. Candles are made from 100% vegetable based waxes with the exception of beeswax. This program can be tailored for young and old audiences alike, and is GREAT FUN! Viking Food Preservation Health & Fitness- Other,

Life Skills- Food
How did people keep their food through the winter before there was refrigeration, or even before Napoleon invented canning? Learn how to make sauerkraut and other homemade foods preserved by using lacto-fermentation, an ancient preservation method used by Vikings. Unlock not only vitamins and minerals, but also enhance gut health by incorporating probiotics into your diet! Participants can watch their choice of fermentation project at the library and taste the final product when complete. They will learn the skills to make their own at home, and try a variety of Viking foods at the end of the presentation.
