Multicultural- Native American, Nature- Other, Performing Arts- Storytelling |
Native American Nature Tales explores tribal myths and legends of the animals and birds of North America. Ranging from the humorous to the heart-felt, these stories celebrate native culture and its strong links to the natural world. We learn an Abenaki canoeing song, explore over seven different animals in the Northwest legend of Loon's Song and discover why America is called Turtle Island. For older audiences the performance features beautiful legends of the spirit like Jumping Mouse. Join one of New England's favorite tellers as these rich stories create a colorful weave of the landscape. Through these how and why legends, students begin to understand how Native American culture clothed their world in story and how this enlivened both imagination and world.
"Your stories were wonderful. The teachers and the students agreed that your presentation is one of the best we've ever had. Thank you so much for bringing to life our study of myths and legends." Missy Thomson, teacher and school librarian, Woodville School, Wakefield, MA

| White, Corey | The Art of Spinning Poi |
Health & Fitness- Other, Multicultural- Other, Visual Arts- Other |
This Poi Spinning program will take the children through all aspects of this up and coming art form. From historical story telling, to making a set of poi themselves, to an all poi fire show, this program will have the children up on their feet, learning and having a blast at the same time.
Corey will teach about the history of Poi, and the culture of the Maori people of New Zealand who originated poi spinning. The children will see examples of the ancient Maori technique for spinning poi as well as the modern technique. They will get to make their own pair of practice poi and, of course, try them out in a basic poi workshop section.
The benefits of the practice of an object manipulation art form are also a highlight of this workshop. Adding an object into your natural body movements increases spatial awareness and builds grey matter in the brain. Pretty cool, huh? Not only will the children be making connections in their brains, they will be making a connection with the poi that they made themselves. Corey aims to excite, educate, teach, and inspire curiosity in those around her with this program.
