Performers and Programs

Program Information

Program name: Bookbinding for Artists: Chapbooks
Program category: Literature- Creative Writing
Literature- Poetry
Visual Arts- Crafts
Program length: 2.5-3 hrs
Audience level: Adult
Audience size: 20
Program description: Have a collection of poems you want to self-publish? Want to expand your creativity into another art medium? Learn how to make chapbooks, historically used to publish small, inexpensive pamphlets of writing. Attendees will learn 3 different types of chap book bindings they can easily recreate at home for their writings and artwork, in addition to taking home the books produced in the workshop. The class is taught in steps, with the teacher displaying and explaining the step for the class and answering questions, and then breaking out into "Do-It-Yourself (DIY)" times when the attendees perform the step on their own. During the DIY times, the teacher takes questions and helps anyone who needs individual help. Handouts explaining each step (with diagrams) are included for the attendees to reference throughout the program and take home. This program is taught by a professional book artist versed in both traditional and modern styles of bookbinding and book preservation. Students also benefit from the opportunity to work with handmade marbled and printed papers from around the world- in bright and fun colors, of course
Space/special requirements: A room for the program with tables and chairs for the attendees, and a table and chair at the front for the teacher (at standing/bar height if possible).
Travel restrictions: See 'additional information about fees'
Program fee: $201- $350
Is this fee negotiable? Yes
Mileage included? Yes
Notes about the fee: Workshop costs are calculated based on the binding materials needed, (leather, paper, etc.), equipment and tool upkeep, workshop handouts, reasonable travel time (see below), and an hourly rate for teaching the workshop, among other variables. Locations within a 15 mile radius of Amityville, NY, have travel time included in the workshop price. Distances greater than 15 miles will have a dollar added per each additional mile, roundtrip. For example, if a location is 20 miles from Amityville, there will be an additional $10 travel fee added to the workshop total for the extra 5 miles to and from the location.
Other notes: This program can be used for teens and young adults as well. Chapbooks are also great for audience crafts at festivals, fairs, or cons.
