Program description: Louis Zamperini’s B-24 bomber crashed in the Pacific Ocean in 1943. He survived 47 days in a lifeboat before capture by the Japanese navy. Zamperini spent 2 years in a POW camp where he was severely beaten and mistreated. After the war Zamperini was tormented by nightmares which continued until he learned to forgive his captors. The program will include his career as a runner at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin where after finishing the 1500 meter race with a flourish he was recognized by Hitler. Video of the CBS documentary “The Great Zamperini” with Bob Simon will be featured.

Other notes: Presenter: Rick Feingold teaches “The Air Force in World War II” at Bergen Community College. His father, Lt. Louis Feingold was an US Army Air Force navigator on a B-17 who survived being shot down over enemy occupied territory and escaped to England in 1944.
