Program description: Introduction to the history of the Native American tradition of flute playing, basic elements of construction of the flute (Plains flute and Woodland flutes), the evolution of design of the instrument and the playing purposes. This is a hands-on class and plastic flutes may be available for those who do not own a flute at advance request of at least several weeks. A display of over thirty flutes representing several custom flute builders and a mini-concert of tunes may be included as a pre-workshop incentive for learning. Each session includes instruction on breath control, fingering technique, and playing scales familiar to the Native American style, building melodies using improvisation and learning how to read NAF tablature.
Space/special requirements: Armless chairs for each participant, an electrical outlet, display table.

Notes about the fee: A fee is required for any participant who wishes to purchase a plastic flute for their class and future use. Because of health reasons, a rental is not appropriate. Each flute may be purchase for under $50. More information at time of contract and group discount may be available.
