| Program description: | Before Cave Walls… A Dynamic Lecture by Christopher Agostino Before we ever painted a cave wall, we painted ourselves. Christopher Agostino, author of Transformations: The Story Behind the Painted Faces, presents an interactive performance lecture on this art of transformation. An exceptional visual artist and fascinating speaker, he delves into the use of masks and makeup in cultural traditions and world theater, symbols and iconography in tribal body art, and the influence of traditional sources on the early 20th century modern artists and current culture. This performance challenges audiences to consider the origins of our collective humanity while taking performance art in a new direction — illustrated live on the faces of volunteers. Originally created as an instructive program for theatrical makeup artists and facepainters, Before Cave Walls… has developed into a performance proven fascinating for artists of all fields and general audiences as well, including family audiences, adults and college students. Presentations for theatres, libraries, festivals, and colleges.
